Origin of Town
Trece Martires is named after the 13 Martyrs of Cavite, who were executed by the Spaniards at the height of the Philippines revolt against Spain on September 12, 1896.
Before its declaration as a city, Trece Martires used to be remote barrio of Tanza called Quintana, which was a friar land of the Santa Cruz de Malabon Estate. Because of the remoteness of the barrio, development came at a slow pace, even after at the end of the 2nd World War. It was not until 1954 that progress were made when President Magsaysay signed its ratification as a chartered city with the governor of Cavite serving as ex-oficio mayor.
How it became a provincial capital:
1. Under Republic Act No. 981 the new city comprised a territory not exceeding one thousand hectares located at or near the intersection of the Tanza-Indang Road and the Naic-Dasmariῆas Road in the province of Cavite.
2. In June 23, 1957 the original act was amended by Republic Act 1912 increasing its territory to 3 917 hectares. Consequently, the municipalities of Indang and General Trias has to yield parts of their respective areas to this territorial expansion.
3. On April 7, 1959 Republic Act. 2130 was approved by the Congres of the Philippines giving Trece Martires city administrative jurisdiction over 100-meter strip of land along and including four national roads radiating from the city of Tnza, Indang, Matanda and Tres Cruces Dams, thus stretching the territorial limits by 10 kilometers all around.
